About Mason

Mason is a young university that, in just a short time, has made impressive strides in size, stature and influence. Today, as Virginia’s largest public research university, we are setting the benchmark for a bold, progressive education that serves the needs of our students and communities. To that end, we have 10 schools and colleges devoted to a variety of areas of study.

George Mason: Patriotism Personified.

George Mason, for whom our university is named, was one of the greatest of the founding fathers of the United States. Mason drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which became a model for the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights.

We Are in Virginia. But We Serve the World.

Mason is committed to creating a more just, free and prosperous world. Located in one of the most important political, economic and intellectual hubs in the world, we accept our responsibility to serve others: to help our students succeed, enrich the life of our community, and contribute to solving some of the most complex global problems of our time.

The bachelor degree programs in biology provide a sound liberal arts education with substantial experience in quantitative and analytical thought, along with preparation for related professions. Our entire core (required) courses include a recitation, a laboratory, or both and we require additional laboratory experience beyond the core.

Through the requirements outlined above, the Department provides the strong background necessary not only for graduate study in the Life Sciences, but also enables students to develop careers in a wide variety of disciplines, including secondary school teaching, environmental management, microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetics, wildlife management, fisheries biology, and marine science. Furthermore, our curriculum prepares a student for careers in the Health Sciences including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and related allied health disciplines. The BS degree in Medical Laboratory Science prepares students for careers in doctor’s offices, and hospitals, as well as in biotechnology and industrial laboratories. Individuals with the MLAB degree often move into research and administrative positions later in their careers.... [-]

Program Overview

Become a cyber superhero. Technology and the sustained flow of information now touch every part of our daily lives. BS in cyber security engineering focuses on safeguarding existing systems and building resilient new ones.

Opportunities

Students who earn their degree from the first such program in the U.S. will be uniquely positioned for high-demand careers protecting physical systems from cyber attacks. Graduates will find jobs in government, defense, transportation, telecommunications, or almost any field they choose. The first class entered in 2014 and local employers such as the Advanced Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University and Northrop Grumman are already courting these students for internships....
