DigiPen Institute of Technology is the first university in the word to specialise in video game education with 3 campuses in Redmond-USA (Our main campus), Singapore and Bilbao-Europe (opened in 2010). In the Computer Science degree we teach starting with the fundamentals of Real-Time Interactive Simulation using video games as a means of doing so, our students produce video games making each of the individual components that come together to make the games from scratch. They learn to make the game engine, artificial intelligence, graphics engine, the physics, and all without using any software that they have not created themselves from scratch. During the 4 years of the bachelorâs degree the students make 5 complete video games (3 games in 2D and 2 games in 3D) working in teams made up of programmers and animation artists and in the exact conditions that they would be working under in professional video game companies. The quality of the games produced by DigiPen students is such that they habitually compete in international video game competitions. DigiPen has won (56 prizes), more than any other video game school, in the sectorâs most important Independent Games festival in San Francisco.
In our Bachelor of Art and Animation (BFA), our students start by learning the basic fundamentals of drawing, using perspective and proportion correctly, learning about colour, composition and texture. They develop their own characters and put into practice everything that they study in their anatomy classes. They make animated films in 2D, in teams and individually, in black and white and in colour. They then learn how to make 3Dmodels of their characters and environments. In the film classes they learn how to move the camera and set up and illuminate their scenes. Finally students learn how to edit their films so that they come alive! (I have included below some of our award-winning DigiPen Bilbao student films) Our BFA students also work in collaboration with programmers producing all the images for the video games and learning first-hand what it is to work in a video game production company.
