Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College) was established after the reorganization of two Šiauliai higher schools (medical and technical), they had long-term experience in training specialists. The Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College) proceeding with the traditions of both schools and organizing its activity strives for the following aims:

  • to ensure accessibility of higher education for everybody who desires and is able to study;
  • to prepare the specialists of high qualification;
  • to ensure the quality of studies;
  • to create the constantly studying society and conditions for those who express a desire to perfect their qualifications, to continue everlasting studies.

Our aim is to remain transparent and open, to react to the ever-changing demands of the labour market, to satisfy the demands that young people and everybody who has the desire to study express them. Vision Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College) is an intellectual organization, which is a leading state higher education institution in the Northern region of Lithuania, it is competitive and recognized in Lithuania and Europe; changing faster than the changes in its environment happen, ensuring the offer of prospective study programmes and high quality of the studies as well as coherence between knowledge and practical skills, developing social partnerships, creating a motivating academic environment and forming common human values.   • To allow to acquire Professional Bachelor degree and professional qualifications based on scientific applied research, to ensure the quality of the studies and the study process in conformity with the European Union standards.
  • To flexibly and quickly respond to changes in the labor market, to train qualified professionals, to carry out re-training, refresher training, to develop the society open to education, culture, and knowledge.
  • To train a creative, well-educated, dignified, ethically responsible, civic, independent and entrepreneurial personality.

The Past... The history of Šiauliai higher medical school began on July 1, 1946, at 16 M. K. Ciurlionis street in the outskirts of Šiauliai. The Nurses’ medical school was established at that time. In 1991 the Medical school was changed to the Higher Medical school and on September 1, 2002, it became the Faculty of Healthcare in Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College). Šiauliai Higher Technical School began its history when Šiauliai agrozootechnical School was founded in 1959. In 1961 it became Šiauliai Polytechnical School and since 1991 the school has functioned as Šiauliai Higher Technical School. On September 1, 2002, Šiauliai Higher Technical School became the Faculty of Business and Technologies in Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College). The Present... Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College) established in 2002 is a higher non-university school. It is the only State College in the north of Lithuania. Over 2300 students study at University and over 260 teachers work there. Both students and teachers constantly participate in various seminars, conferences, organize and implement various international and vocational projects, carry out applied research, have their training practice in the enterprises of social partners or continue their studies at universities. In 2007/2008 the College carries out nineteen non-university programmes, the faculties of Health Care and Business and Technologies are functioning. The Šiaulių valstybinė kolegija (Šiauliai State College) co-operates with the Universities of Lithuania The College follows the quality management system conforming to LST ISO 9001:2008 standard, which integrates a part of the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model (EFQM) principles.

Basic facts on Lithuania and Šiauliai

Lithuania is the country, located at the western end of the East European Plain, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. State name – Republic of Lithuania. Official language: Lithuanian. It is an Indo – European, non – Slavic and non – Germanic language. Capital: Vilnius. Major cities – Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys. Background: Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. In March of 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence. Government: Executive branch: chief of state – President, head of government – Premier. Legislative branch: unicameral Parliament or Seimas. The Seimas consists of 141 Seimas members, representatives of the People, elected directly or by secret ballot for a four – year term. National currency: Euro Population: 3,378,600 (2007). Ethnic groups – Lithuanians 83,45%, Russians 6,31%, Polish 6,74%, Belarusians 1,23%, Ukrainians 0,65%, other 1,62%. Major religion: Roman Catholics. Neighbour States: North border with Latvia, East border with Belarus, South border with Poland, Southwest border with Russia. Lithuania is in the Central European Time Zone: GMT + 2 hours in winter, GMT + 1 hour in summer. ŠIAULIAI Šiauliai is located in the northern part of Lithuania. It was first mentioned in the chronicles on the 22 September 1236. The Livonian Order was destroyed in this battle (Sun Battle). Some claim this is why Šiauliai is known as the City of Sun. The Victory of Lithuanians and their allies in this battle is a very important event in the history of the State of Lithuania. The Sun Clock Square was arranged in 1986 to commemorate the 750th anniversary of this victory. On this occasion, the Hunter sculpture was built too. It symbolizes the origin of the town’s name. The town got its name from soldiers and hunters who lived there. The whole area of the city is 81.13 sq. km. According to the area, Šiauliai is the third biggest town, according to the number of inhabitants (130.020 inhabitants) it is the fourth. Šiauliai is famous for Bubiai Mound 15 km from Šiauliai known for its wooden castle which was burnt by Crusaders, Salduve Mound which is in the Eastern part of the town. Domantai-Jurgaiciai Mound is a sacred place, its other name is the Hill of Crosses. The town sometimes flourished, sometimes suffered from wars, plague, and fires. Today it is the largest cultural, industrial and scientific center in Northern Lithuania.
