Founded in Prague in 1990, Anglo-American University (AAU)*, is the oldest private institution of higher education in the Czech Republic. We pride ourselves on providing a personalized and distinctive university education in the English language. Utilizing the best from American and British academic traditions, AAU educates future leaders and global citizens in a multicultural setting of students and faculty from over 60 different countries. With its main campus situated in a magnificent palace right under the Prague Castle in the historic district of Malá Strana, AAU boasts one of the most attractive locations of any Central European university. We are a noted center of academic excellence where students from all over the world come to pursue academic studies in a setting that encourages intellectual curiosity, leadership, cooperation, and respect for cultural and national diversity. AAU is honored to have an international core faculty trained at fine universities worldwide including Cambridge, Berkeley, Stanford, Yale, and Paris-Sorbonne. Among our professors are well-known published academics in their fields.

Campus

AAU’s main campus is located in the newly restored Thurn-Taxis Palace, a magnificent building with a rich history where our students can enjoy their studies in beautiful and spacious classrooms. The Thurn-Taxis Palace, a cultural monument dating to the 17th century, was previously owned by the Thurn und Taxis family, a German noble family with prominent standing in Europe. Now in the ownership of the city of Prague, the palace offers 16 modern fully-equipped classrooms, a computer lab, and a visual arts studio along with a cafeteria, spacious courtyard and modern student lounges that students can take advantage of for studying and socializing. Located next to the palace and directly accessible from the campus are the Vojan Gardens, a beautiful and spacious park.

WSCUC Accreditation

AAU is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), one of six official regional accrediting associations in the United States recognized by the US Department of Education. WSCUC accredits nearly 200 universities, including such prestigious universities as the University of California Berkeley, Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Southern California and Chapman University. In addition, WSCUC has accredited twelve select foreign universities, including AAU – the only university in Europe to receive this prestigious accreditation. This means our graduates receive a university degree that is recognized worldwide as meeting the same strict academic standards that leading universities in the United States are subject to.

Other Accreditations

In addition to our U.S. accreditation, most of AAU’s programs are accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic or else are offered in cooperation with our international partners. AAU’s MBA program, which is offered in cooperation with Chapman University in California, is globally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business AACSB), the gold standard of business school accreditation. AAU´s Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law (CertHE Common Law), as well as our LLB and LLM programs are offered in cooperation with the University of London, which has also conferred Registered Centre status on AAU’s John H. Carey II School of Law, thereby providing formal recognition of the quality of legal instruction offered at AAU.

B.A. in Visual Art Studies

The B.A. in Visual Art Studies program offers three different areas of concentration: Art History and Art Theory, Arts Management & Curatorial Studies, and Studio Art options from painting, photography, and sculpture to conceptual and cross-media arts.

This program is unique in that students acquire knowledge from different aspects of the art world, preparing them for a better variety of options in the future, including the pursuit of an MFA (Master in Fine Arts). The studio art classes are all taught by internationally recognized and active artists. Visual Art Studies also requires an interdisciplinary liberal arts foundation, and limited electives in Humanities and Media Studies are encouraged. By studying sociology, psychology, media studies, politics, and economics, students develop critically and informed thinking about humanitarian and social issues, which is such a part of the contemporary art scene. Students in this program thus gain a deeper or more sophisticated grasp of art history and art theory beyond usual art-studio focused programs, thus giving them a distinct competitive advantage for local and international pursuits....
