BSc (Hons) Equine Studies Degree

The three year full-time degree programme in Equine Studies has been carefully designed to enable students to develop appropriate skills and knowledge to prepare for a career in a demanding and exciting industry.

The BSc (Hons) Equine Studies course utilises excellent teaching facilities across all subject areas, with the Equine Centre playing a pivotal role.

Our excellent learning resources will help you develop riding and husbandry skills in Year 1, through to using the resources for your dissertation in Year 3.

Teaching and Learning

Year 1 and 3 students work collaboratively every year to host an inter-college event at the Equine Centre. The Equine Centre hosted ‘horse whisperer’ Monty Roberts and an international research team scientifically comparing his methods with UK conventional training when starting young horses. Students were invited to assist in the running of this project from day to day horse care through to Year 3 dissertation data collection.

Optional units in Year 3 will enable you to choose a study path appropriate to your career needs. A dissertation in your final year will focus on a particular area of personal interest. For example, one student recently presented a study assessing the possible benefits of Pilates exercise to the horse rider.

Delivery of the course is complemented by a range of visits to studs, sports horse centres and competition grounds, with guest speakers in nutrition, physiotherapy and other subjects. An international study tour is invaluable in widening your awareness of the equine industry, as well as being great fun and a chance to get to know your fellow students better.

Assessment Methods and Research Opportunities

Tutorial support throughout your programme of study will help you to develop your skills and knowledge, using a varied range of assessments, including case studies, seminars, investigative reports and practical sessions.
