Introduction
MTSU offers a hands-on experience in the study of history that encourages critical thinking and original research. In the classroom, History majors study everything from ancient Egypt to the Soviet Union. Many classes include experiential learning that takes students into the community for hands-on learning or challenges students to role-play major events in history. Outside the classroom, students meet nationally known historians through the department’s Strickland Scholars program. They study abroad in faculty-led programs in Scotland, Senegal, Vietnam, and other locales. They socialize with other students through History Club and travel to American historical sites with their classmates. They join the national honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, to network and share their research with students and scholars nationwide. They also have access to a range of scholarships available only to History majors at MTSU.
The program emphasizes the field of Public History, with MTSU among the first American universities to embrace the field. Public historians may teach, but they also oversee historical sites, curate archives and collections, run museums, conduct oral histories, and pursue many other careers that bring history to the broader community. Some History majors decide to continue their study of public history at MTSU, which offers a master's and doctoral degrees in Public History.
Admissions
Curriculum
Students majoring in History can choose to earn a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) in History or a B.S. (Bachelor of Science) in History, or they may pursue either degree with Teacher Licensure.
A minor in history is also offered. The department additionally coordinates interdisciplinary minors in African American Studies; Media, History, and Culture; Environment and Human Society; Medieval Studies; Southern Studies; Twentieth-Century European Studies; American Culture; and War, Policy, and Security.
Three graduate degrees are available: the M.A. in History, the M.A. in History with an emphasis on Public History, and the Ph.D. in Public History.
Students in the Master of Arts in History program may choose a major field in the United States or European History, but graduate classes in global history can fulfill requirements for the minor field.
Students in the Master of Arts in History program with an emphasis in Public History may choose one of four areas: historic preservation, cultural resource management, museum management, and archival management. Heritage tourism studies and oral history are also significant faculty strengths.
MTSU's Ph.D. program, which began in 2005, is the first to declare public history as the major field of study. The innovative, practice-based, individualized program of study is offered in partnership with the Center for Historic Preservation and the Center for Popular Music.
