200+ hours of field experience.
Field experience allows the student the opportunity to put into practice what they are learning and apply it in an elementary classroom or ESL setting.
Teacher As Servant-Leader
The primary mission of the Boyce Teacher Education Program is to provide Christ-centered quality teacher education, preparing the next generation of educators to be servant-leaders in private and public schools and on the mission field. The TEP is designed to equip the servant-leader with the range of knowledge necessary for the profession of teaching, with the skills of teaching as recognized in the education profession, and with the dispositions of a servant-leader in a world of diversity.
Teaching at Boyce allows Melissa Tucker to combine her passions for teaching, missions, and training teachers into one job that she loves: “It’s a job that everyday I sit back and think, ‘I can’t believe I get to be in this place at this time doing this work.”
Melissa Tucker, Assistant Professor of Teacher Education
Program of Study
Teacher Education students can choose from one of three emphases. Classical Education, English as a New Language/Second Language (ESL/ENL), and the State Certification.
The Classical Education (non-certified) emphasis will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to teach using a classical approach to education. This approach teaches students how to learn and how to think based on their developmental stage. Learn More
The ESL/ENL emphasis (non-certified) will provide you with specific skills which will prepare you to teach English to those from diverse backgrounds and cultures, providing a unique gospel opportunity. Learn More
The State Certification emphasis allows teacher candidates the opportunity to pursue a provisional state certification, enabling them to enter directly into the public school system after the completion of their Bachelor degree. Learn More
The Boyce Teacher Education Program in SACS Accredited and received provisional certification from the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) on August 20, 2018. While the provisional status is representative of a three-year probationary period as the Boyce Teacher Education Program continues toward full certification, this status allows teacher candidates to apply directly for a state teaching license upon completion of their degree.
For those interested in pursuing a degree in Teacher Education through one of our non-certified emphases, we have partnered with a like-minded evangelical university to offer our Teacher Education Program graduates a streamlined process for earning a Master of Arts in Teaching with a licensure program which will provide state certification in the areas of elementary or special education. This online program enables Boyce graduates to stay on our campus in Louisville, KY, while completing their studies. The entire program is designed to allow students to complete the baccalaureate and master’s degrees in as little as four years.
Whether a student desires to pursue a non-certified emphasis in ESL/ENL, classical education, or whether they desire to pursue certification and enter into the public school system, the Boyce TEP program combines a strong biblical foundation with an educational pedagogy, preparing students to serve in various capacities worldwide.
Admissions Requirements
- Pastor/Church Recommendation Form
When filling out our online application, recommendation forms are emailed to those whom you’ve indicated should receive them.
Family members may not complete a recommendation form. Recommenders must have known the applicant for a minimum of one year. If for some reason, recommendations do not reflect the proper amount of diversity, the Admissions Office may request additional recommendations. - Spiritual Autobiography
When filling out the online application you’ll find a space to type your Spiritual Autobiography. The Spiritual Autobiography is a typed essay — no longer than 500 words — documenting your conversion, concisely articulating the gospel and telling your reasons for choosing Boyce College. - Official Transcripts
Transcription from all educational institutions is required. Official High School transcripts or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test scores are necessary unless the applicant has more than 24 college hours of post-high school college credit (dual enrollment courses do not count towards these 24 hours). It is best for applicants to request that transcripts be sent directly from their school to the Southern Seminary Admissions Office. In no case will the seminary consider as official a transcript marked “Issued to Student.” For transfer students, we also require other college and/or university transcripts - Application Fee
A $40 non-refundable application fee is due to the admissions office before the student’s application packet can be processed. - ACT/SAT/CLT Scores
All applicants (including home-schooled students) are required to submit scores from either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), American College Test (ACT), or the Classic Learning Test (CLT). The SAT code for Boyce College is 3858 and the ACT code is 5522. Applicants who are 24 or older or have passed 15 hours (post-high-school) from (a) a regionally accredited college or (b) a college with AABC accreditation, and have maintained at least a C average, are not required to submit these standardized test scores. (SAT, ACT, and CLT scores are not used as a basis of admission to Boyce College but are used to help evaluate a student’s ability to do college-level work.) Test scores can be waived for applicants 24 years or older. - Housing Application
All applicants (including internet and extension center applicants) are required to affirm or deny their need for campus housing. Campus housing constraints require us to know of housing needs at the earliest possible date. The following link will take you to our housing application. - Documents of Citizenship
Documentation of immigration classification for students who are not citizens of the United States.
