Introduction
The La Salle Higher Technical School of Architecture (ETSALS) - Ramon Llull University offers a learning experience in Architecture and Building, working with the talent of leading architects from Barcelona, as well as from the rest of the world.
A personalized study plan with various options guides the student based on their interests. It is articulated in three main axes of knowledge:
- Architectural design: implies linking the fact of knowing how to build what is imagined in a cultural and professional reality that gives it meaning.
- Technical-scientific axis is the domain of constructive knowledge as a sensitive and manipulable aspect.
- Cultural-humanistic axis is necessary to guide the student, the future architect, in an active, intensive and critical look.
ETSALS has implemented a new methodology that differentiates it from other architecture schools and identifies all our students through these three differential qualities:
internationalization
Our students have the possibility of living international experiences created thanks to a network of collaborating partners: external teachers invited to teach courses and master classes; academic exchanges between a wide network of prestigious foreign universities, collaborations through professional stages in architecture studios of international prestige, which will allow the student to become familiar with methodologies from other realities in the workplace, and academic trips to international cities that They meet the triple A: good Architecture, good Academies of Architecture and good Architects.
Through the sum of international relations that are generated throughout the courses, La Salle Architecture students are enriched with talent from multiple origins and, in turn, reinforce the international position of the Escuela Técnica Superior de La Salle architecture.
Mainstreaming
We promote the strength of the University Campus through objectives and projects carried out transversally among students from the different areas of knowledge of La Salle, promoting the work of the multidisciplinary team.
This learning of transversal work in multidisciplinary teams is nowadays a requirement of the profession: interdisciplinary and adapted to more transversal work methodologies.
Personalization
At ETSALS we carry out a personalized accompaniment to the student to value their particularities and sensitivities. The coach architect or mentor, monitors and guarantees a good preparation of the student for an increasingly heterogeneous professional context.
Through the service of career services , La Salle facilitates the incorporation of the student in the professional field through an internship program in offices of recognized prestige, during the 1st and 2nd cycle.
The personalization of the degree is materialized through the Units, thematic units of semester specialization that guide each student through their own elective affinities during the second cycle.
- Campus unit: Transversal work with other Campus Degrees.
- Barcelona unit: City projects for the city.
- International unit: International projects that are carried out in foreign territory.
- Visiting unit: A professor of recognized international prestige is the guest in charge of a Unit.
- Tectonics unit: The art of construction is worked on in relation to the use of artistic design.
- Sustainable unit: Architectural sustainability projects.
- Lab unit: From design to 3D construction. New digital manufacturing techniques: More creative, optimal and sustainable.
- Big data unit: Creation of the cities of the XXI century from the information. Smart mobility, Zero Waste, Responsive City.
- Urban planning unit: Quality, friendly and eco-responsible cities and territory, with Barcelona as a reference.
smart learning
A new educational model for a new normality.
This new normality requires a new way of teaching and learning, adapted to a changing and uncertain situation that demands flexible, intelligent and technological learning that adapts to all the new educational needs of students.
La Salle Campus Barcelona – Ramon Llul Universityl promotes the new Smart Learning model and goes a step further in its innovative DNA, influencing all areas of the educational process: service to students, international exchanges, distance internships, teleworking model applied to internships with companies, the job market and research projects.
What does the new Smart Learning model consist of?
State-of-the-art technology has been implemented in the classrooms that will allow students, both national and international, who cannot reach the Campus to attend and participate in classes without being physically in the classroom. The sessions given with face-to-face students will be broadcast live over the internet and those who attend from outside the classroom will be projected on screens so that the teaching staff and the face-to-face students can see them and interact with them. All students, both face-to-face and those who have not been able to come to campus, will form a single group maintaining the same academic schedule and contact with classmates and teachers.
With the new Smart Learning model, students will be able to have a training:
- Personalized, because it adapts to the student and their needs or circumstances, regardless of the healthcare setting.
- Flexible, because it overcomes the barriers of the online or face-to-face method with a platform that allows face-to-face, blended and distance learning.
- Intelligent, because it is a new way of teaching and learning that combines physical and interactive experiences.
- Technological, in order to implement the Smart Learning methodology, the classrooms have been transformed into Smart Classrooms, which consist of:
- Audio system with more than 8,000 virtual microphones per classroom
- Cameras equipped with artificial intelligence
- Smart Boards to share content to and from the Smart Classroom, promoting collaborative work.
Curriculum
Methodology
The structure of the Degree in Architecture consists of a total of 6 years (3+2+1), divided into three parts: two cycles and an enabling master's degree that, when successfully completed by the student, enables them to obtain the degree in architecture, and full skills to sign their own projects.
The first cycle lasts three years, and its horizontal development includes the basic subjects and full skills to sign their own projects., which are the foundations that establish the core knowledge of the teaching of Architecture: drawing, structures, descriptive geometry, history, etc. During the first stage, the topics that will enable the student to experiment later with the design processes are acquired and consolidated, guaranteeing technical and cultural accuracy when designing. The classes are given in specialized classrooms and in the Design Studio; the contents are evaluated annually in the first introductory year and semester in the second and third year.
With a methodology based on personalization, as the studies progress, students can choose the way of investigating Architecture that best suits their individual sensibilities. The second cycle fosters greater synergy between courses by proposing a vertical development (pillars) in 4 semesters, during which fourth- and fifth-year students acquire the ability to personalize their studies while sharing the processes related to the project design.
The enabling master concentrates the knowledge acquired over the previous 5 years to test the student's abilities before discovering [and discovering oneself] the labor market, and face the complexity and difficulties of carrying out a work of architecture, that is, knowing how to execute your project on a 1:1 scale.

In this sense, it has placed the URL among the top 10 universities in Spain, clearly above the national average and standing out especially in the branches of Social and Legal Sciences and Engineering and Architecture.
Program Outcome
Goals
With the Degree in Architecture of La Salle you will learn about the profession based on:
Talent
- Talent forming talent: Thanks to the coexistence and teamwork of students from different backgrounds and ages, the transfer of talent between students is encouraged, as well as between the teaching community and the students themselves. (teach -> <-learn)
- Prestigious architects, both national and international, teach subjects, masterclasses, and units offering a learning experience with a practical and international vision.
- Synchronization between academic and professional work: articulating the concerns of each student so that La Salle and the Architecture Studio where they are carrying out the internship can mutually nourish each other with talent (mass of knowledge).
Design studio
The Design Studio is the heart of the new pedagogical scenario. A unique space in Barcelona with the character of an agora that welcomes the new academic model and encourages transversality and transfer of knowledge.
Each student has their own workspace where they can develop and experience each project in contact with their classmates and teachers and with access to all the material and documentation.
The interrelationship between the student's activities and the faculty: There is a total transfer of knowledge between workgroups, subjects, and courses. The teacher acts as experienced pedagogical support to monitor the exercises.
Learning-by-challenge approach: in the Design Studio, projects are carried out based on real cases that are carried out in the "architects' workshop" of the Workshop, Projects, and Urban Planning subjects.
Identification and belonging
Visibility at work: Progressive occupation of the Design Studio, being populated as a whole by models, plans, books, personal computers, etc., and granting it its own identity, which can be extended to the entire campus and the school's unique attribute.
