Welcome to the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology. We apply traditional and emerging scientific methods to understand the ecology of fish and wildlife and the communities they inhabit. We apply this knowledge to help make more informed conservation and management decisions as well as to further society’s understanding of the structure and function of ecological systems. -

The Earth is called the "blue planet" because of the abundance of water covering its surface. However, less than one percent of that is available freshwater, a precious resource we need to survive. Freshwater scientists study the health of freshwater systems—lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands—gathering critical information such as the impact of invasive species, changing levels of biological diversity, and the effects of climate change and pollution. Their work is at the forefront of finding innovative solutions to the complex challenges facing our freshwater resources. In our unique partnership program, you’ll earn your bachelor’s degree at Carroll and go on to complete your master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in as little as five years. Choose from Carroll's Environmental Science LINK program, which integrates the Earth Sciences, Chemistry, and Ecology with opportunities to customize the curriculum to your interests; or the Biology LINK program, where you’ll focus on living systems, animals, plants, microbes, and human life. -

The Susquehanna River Valley is one of the best places to study the natural world. At the confluence of its major river, we’re surrounded by abundant waterways, forests, and farms. We have a state-of-the-art freshwater research laboratory and an 87-acre environmental field station right on campus. In our ecology program, you’ll study everything from streams, lakes, and wetlands to nutrient cycling and land ecosystems. Learn how air, water, soil, and organisms coexist and how wildlife functions within their native habitats. -

This concentration is intended for students that want to pursue a career that focuses on Ecology, Environmental Sciences, and Evolutionary Biology fields. The overall educational objective of the biological sciences undergraduate program is to provide students with a conceptual foundation in biology and a skills base necessary to build successful careers in industry or business or to succeed in graduate school or professional school. Biology is a dynamic science. The knowledge is enormous and expanding at an exponential rate. Our students learn how to assimilate this content and play their own part in new knowledge discovery. We have remarkable faculty and excellent resources available to support innovative individuals. Our students are curious, energetic, and thoroughly engaged in the life of Southeastern Biology and the surrounding community. Department Highlights The Florida Parishes offer an amazing diversity of organisms and are an excellent environment for outdoor learning and discovery. The regional biodiversity is remarkable, providing opportunities for important field-based learning. Several of our resources facilitate this: the Southeastern Louisiana University Microbiology Testing Laboratory, the Southeastern Louisiana University Vertebrate Museum, the Outdoor Learning Center, the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station, and the Sustainability Center. Participation in a research lab is one of our best teaching tools. For any student that wants it, our experience can be highly immersive. Many of our faculty maintain active research labs and students can participate in research programs, study abroad, and present at regional and national conferences, along with other research and internship opportunities. Louisiana's wetlands are disappearing at a rate unequaled in history. In the time it takes you to read this, a chunk of marsh about the size of your car (100 square feet) will disappear from our coastline. In other terms, about 3 acres of wetlands per hour are lost. The SLU Wetlands Restoration Lab designs and implements restoration experiments, both in SITU and the greenhouse, and executes the appropriate restoration procedures. -

Water is one of the most important substances on Earth. It is essential to many of the things we need and enjoy in life: food, transport, and recreation, but managing it can also pose some serious challenges. Around the world, water managers contend with droughts, floods, sea-level rise, overfishing, pollution, plastic soup, and many other risks to both our natural environment and our society. We need water managers to safeguard our future! -
