The Historic Preservation and Community Planning program approach the subjects of historic preservation, architectural and urban design, planning, and architectural and urban history as a group of related disciplines that together address the management of change in the built environment from a design perspective.

Grounded in environmental design, the Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design (BA-ARH-D) degree provides a strong undergraduate education while allowing the student to experience and gain skills in architectural design, art, architectural, and urban history and theory, fundamentals of sustainability, materials, building construction and structures, as well as advanced design representation tools. The Architectural Design major educates future design leaders. It is an intensive program focused on rigorous design processes. Food science is an interdisciplinary field involving microbiology, engineering, biochemistry, nutrition, and sensory science to better understand food processes and improve food products for the general public. As the stewards of the field, food scientists study the physical, microbial, and chemical makeup of food. They apply their findings to develop the safe, nutritious, and sustainable foods and innovative packaging that line supermarket shelves daily.

The community and regional development major provides a broad comparative understanding of the ways that economic, political and socio-cultural forces are transforming regions and local communities. Students in the major work with people to solve problems while creating political, social and economic opportunities.

The BSLA curriculum includes study of the elements and principles of art, design and planning processes, environmental analysis, graphic and visual communication, plants and planting design, construction methods and sustainability, professional practice, and environmental history and theory.

Students in the architecture program at the Knowlton School learn to understand formal and spatial relationships and the impact of ideas based on the research and analysis of cultural, social, political, economic and environmental contexts.
