The Historic Preservation and Community Planning program approach the subjects of historic preservation, architectural and urban design, planning, and architectural and urban history as a group of related disciplines that together address the management of change in the built environment from a design perspective.

Fairmont State is the only University in West Virginia that offers degrees for the study of architecture. The mission of the Architecture Program is to educate aspiring architects to be creative thinkers who pursue architecture as an integrative process. Design, history, theory, culture, sustainability, and the realities of practice are interpreted both within the unique character and dynamics of the Appalachian region and within the modern global community.

The Architectural Design major educates future design leaders. It is an intensive program focused on rigorous design processes. The Architect is a professional who possesses the scientific and technical knowledge that allows him to plan, project, adapt, construct and evaluate buildings and all types of architectural and urban environments; Has general abilities and skills for architectural design, for building and for the generation and dissemination of architectural knowledge. Likewise, he is trained to find creative and innovative solutions to habitat problems, with a humanistic attitude and values that allow him to face them in a holistic, sustainable manner and with professional ethics.

The major in urban studies and public policy is designed to prepare students for careers in public service or private corporations involved in public issues. Career paths include government, law, city planning, non-profit management and public policy analysis. The curriculum explores urban issues in real estate development, transportation, land use and housing that focuses on finding solutions to inner-city problems such as unemployment, poverty, and crime.

The programme is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive educational experience, gaining knowledge and skills in preparation for the successful and ethical practice of architecture.

Food science is an interdisciplinary field involving microbiology, engineering, biochemistry, nutrition, and sensory science to better understand food processes and improve food products for the general public. As the stewards of the field, food scientists study the physical, microbial, and chemical makeup of food. They apply their findings to develop the safe, nutritious, and sustainable foods and innovative packaging that line supermarket shelves daily.

The BSLA curriculum includes study of the elements and principles of art, design and planning processes, environmental analysis, graphic and visual communication, plants and planting design, construction methods and sustainability, professional practice, and environmental history and theory.
