Introduction
The Department of Chemistry offers a B.S. in Chemistry certified by the American Chemical Society. This program offers students a rigorous course of study in the five traditional areas of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry). The program is designed to develop students' knowledge of chemistry while building skills in experimental techniques and scientific communication.
In addition, undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in laboratory research with Catholic University faculty and in internship opportunities at summer REU programs or at area research facilities such as the Bureau of Engraving, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The chemistry curriculum prepares students for a career in industry or secondary education, for admission to a graduate program, or for admission to a professional program (i.e. medical school, veterinary school, physical therapy program).
Why Study Chemistry in D.C.?
Second to none, Washington, D.C., is a premier scientific community. Surrounded by prestigious and renowned institutions, such as the ACS (American Chemical Society), NIH (National Institutes of Health), NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), AAAS (The American Association for the Advancement of Science), AWIS (The Association for Women in Science), NIST (National Institute of Standards), NRL (National Research Laboratory), NHGRI (National Human Genome Research Institute) and SI (The Smithsonian Institute). The Catholic University campus is a thriving environment for fostering scholarship and working relationships with these extraordinary research facilities.
Additionally, students at Catholic University have access to additional academic resources through the Consortium of Universities and libraries: American University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, Howard University, George Mason, Johns Hopkins, as well as our own Theological College.
