Introduction
Bachelor of Environmental Planning
A multi-disciplinary, research-led programme that provides the theory and practices consistent with contemporary environmental planning. Waikato's Bachelor of Environmental Planning provides a pathway into a career in urban planning and resource management, with a focus on practical industry experience such as preparing the policy on the environment and attending resource management hearings.
The Bachelor of Environmental Planning (BEP) at Waikato focuses on local, national and global environmental management issues. Areas of research include sustainable housing, freshwater management, Maori resource management and biodiversity conservation.
You'll be taught by leading industry experts who are at the forefront of the latest research and innovation. Their expertise will provide you with a solid foundation in professional planning skills and a specialist degree accredited by the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI).
With close connections to the wider Waikato Region and its wealth of natural resource, Waikato's Environmental Planning programme brings together papers from subjects including Environmental Planning, Biology, Economics, Political Science, Geography and Māori and Pacific Development.
The BEP provides you with practical, industry experience gained across labs, workshops and field trips. You'll also benefit from guest lecturers and practical activities, and will attend industry-focused events such as resource management hearings, case law presentations, and mock hearings.
This four-year degree is divided into two pathways, each with three streams:
Environmental Science and Resource Planning Pathway:
You'll develop a strong science knowledge to complement the core environmental planning papers.

Socio-Economic Policy and Planning Pathway:
You'll develop strong economic, political and policy analysis skills to complement the core environmental planning papers.

Practical experience
Many of the papers offered within the BEP contain opportunities for practical experience including labs, workshops and field trips. Guest lecturers from the profession, as well as people and organizations involved in environmental planning and resource management, will give presentations.
As you progress in your programme of study you are expected to undertake a wide range of practical activities as part of your assessment. Preparation of maps, GIS applications, resource consent applications, resource management plans, iwi management plans, policy position papers and environmental monitoring plans are examples of the intended practical experience component. You will attend resource management hearings, be involved in case law presentations and participate in mock hearings.

You will be eligible to apply for this degree if you have University Entrance and meet any additional requirements for the qualification. All other applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
