BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology with Foundation Year* (*Subject to approval)

Our BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology with Foundation Year* is a four-year degree. The teaching team includes practising criminologists at some centres. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of cutting edge criminological and sociological theorising and will be able to apply this to current socio-economic policies and conditions. In order to achieve this, students will develop a critical understanding of criminology and sociology in relation to current issues such as urbanisation, embodiment, family, globalisation, marginalisation and migration. Criminology and Sociology will be considered from a fresh perspective using feminist, critical, cultural, and race critiques to revisit societal issues. The course is aimed at students who may not be served by the current sociology/criminology degree courses in research-led universities. The first year is a Foundation Year, which students study alongside our LLB (Law) students and is taught by our law tutors. This year focuses on developing the key skills required to undertake degree level study, both academic and legal/professional related learning. The subsequent three years then follow our full-time BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology course*.... [-]

Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes and is traditionally a popular field of study. By the very nature of the profession, psychology is a service vocation. This fits well with Waldorf’s mission of preparing students for “lives of service.” A Bachelor’s degree in psychology prepares students to be well-rounded, educated individuals as it reflects many of the goals of a liberal arts education by providing a knowledge base, thinking skills, analytical reasoning, interpersonal skills, and ethical values. Psychology majors are prepared to pursue graduate and professional programs in psychology, where they could further specialize in a variety of areas in psychology including clinical, experimental, developmental, social, cognitive, human factors, sports, industrial/organizational, health, and forensics. They are also prepared for further education in areas such as medicine, law, social work, nursing, and ministry.... [-]

Get an interdisciplinary look at culture in multiple contexts

“Pull a thread here and you’ll find it’s attached to the rest of the world.” Nadeem Aslam, The Wasted Vigil

The Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies (C.L.C.S.) major at Franklin focuses on cultural phenomena and processes as they unfold under the pressure of historical, social and economic forces. Inherent in our approach is an understanding of culture as an ever-evolving entity that demands continuous acts of interpretation, negotiation, and creativity. Our teaching is both theoretical and topic-based: for instance, we explore how collective memory is shaped in the wake of slavery or apartheid; we seek to understand the consequences of forced or voluntary mobility; we examine the cultural significance of cuisine; we investigate the multiple ways in which law shapes cultural processes; we explore the nexus of culture and nature; and we study forms of popular music as an expression of culture. The comparative work we do explores each topic from a number of disciplinary angles and situates it in its historical context. In this context we ask how the topic is reflected in, and influenced by, literary texts, film, and visual culture; we investigate how new media contribute to our understanding of cultural processes and trace how broader systems of knowledge and power, such as law or policy, come to bear on them. In comparing these various modes of knowledge production, we use theory to help us appreciate cultural nuances and to understand the multiple challenges that confront us in... [-]

Political Science is a broad social science discipline devoted to the study of government and politics of the US, other countries, and the international system. Our central goal is to produce students with a well-rounded knowledge of the discipline and a set of skills that serve as a basis for careers in any number of fields after graduation.

The study of political science provides an excellent basis to learn new skills and knowledge that can be applied in nearly any field. As a discipline, the focus of study is on the political process and institutions of various political systems, including the United States. However, the analysis of politics and government often involves other disciplines, such as history, economics, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, psychology, business, criminal justice, etc. This explicitly multi-disciplinary approach contributes to well-rounded graduates, which naturally leads them into a wide variety of careers. Moreover, the major emphasizes examining problems from multiple perspectives, attention to factual details, and the need to continually develop and revise broader theoretical ideas. This academic experience is later utilized by graduates in whatever careers they choose to pursue.... [-]

The international relations program exposes students to essential questions regarding the processes by which the complexities of interdependence meet with deeply held individual values. Broadly speaking, this involves answering the fundamental question of who gets what, where, when, how, and why in international relations. International relations is an interdisciplinary program that equips students with the breadth (i.e., perspectives) and depth of coverage to contemplate and effectively respond to these questions. More detailed inquiry into a specific geographical region is also possible within the program.

Students pursuing this major are strongly encouraged to incorporate more foreign language and international travel into their academic program. A variety of May Term and semester-long opportunities exist. Moreover, we encourage students to double major in a related field, such as economics, foreign language, history, international business, political science, religion, or sociology to further enhance their understanding and preparation....
